Hearing about Covington from the folks who live or visit here can give you a sense of how much fun a trip to Covington can be. Our blogs allow you to make a deep dive into Covington as you plan your visit.
We are in the shortest month of the year, but the ways in which you can Discover Covington add up – and Valentine’s Day is just one of several national celebrations we’re pairing with ways that you can find your fun in Covington.
Covington’s featured event uplifts Black History Month with a parade on February 15.
Beginning from Legion Field, Covington’s annual Black History Month Parade celebrates the contributions of Black Americans to the community of Covington and the nation. The Washington Street School Children’s Choir and MLK Community Choir will perform on the Square before the parade winds through. Details to be confirmed 1-22 from the city
Each year on the first Saturday of February, many libraries celebrate Take Your Child to the Library Day. Visit two local libraries in the Newton County Library System this, and every day, for free and fabulous family activities. Libraries encourage kids to play, be curious, and make new friends while having fun in an inspired place. More than books, libraries also hold public performances and shows, from musicals to magicians!
World Wetlands Day brings into focus the vital role that wetlands have with our riverways and oceans – harboring nurseries of animals, erosion control and so much more. Make a visit to Alcovy River East End with 16 acres of shaded woodland, gradual rocky inclines, and forested swamp. This restored wetland area is part of the Alcovy River Greenway, a protective corridor surrounding the river in Newton County.
The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation inspires people to take time this week to focus on kindness and how we can spread more random acts of kindness in the community. If you’re picking up a coffee at Covington’s bakeries or cafes, consider buying a cup for the person in line behind you!
Two ideas here. Cheer on your team at Covington’s pubs and restaurants with Big TVs – Bench Warmers Sports Grill, Applebees, Five o’Clock Sports Bar & Grill and The Depots Sports Bar & Grill to name a few. For those who aren’t football focused, this might be a great day to take a tour of Covington with Vampire Stalkers Mystic Falls Tours, Covington Ghost Tours, Main Street Trolleys Movie Tours and even self-guided historic home tours. Check here.
Extend Valentine’s Day into a richly cultural weekend by staying at Twelve Oaks, an antebellum home that was the inspiration for Ashley’s house in Gone With The Wind. Suites honor the town’s cinema history in themes like the Salvatore Brothers Study, and Frankly, Scarlett Junior’s Suite.
Check with Discover Covington on the restaurant scene which has earned its place in the movies – because of course, you’re in The Hollywood of the South™!
Go along the miles of urban and forested pathways on a stroll or bike ride for the earliest flowers – will daffodils be out?
On this day of honoring our nation’s presidents – originally celebrated as Washington’s birthday and later including Lincoln – order a cherry pie as a traditional dessert. Schools, banks and government offices are usually closed, but retail and dining are generally open! Walk the Square’s Hall of Fame as you shop and dine on your day off.
We hope you enjoy your visit or your day off here in Covington! There’s always a reason to return. To stay in the know, sign up for the Discover Covington monthly e-news.
