Downtown Walk of Stars

It’s your turn to experience the Hollywood of the South®, where you'll enter the portal of your own cinematic path of discovery.

Skip, stroll, and rock and roll around Downtown Covington Square and view the legends of film and television enshrined on pavers in the Covington Walk of the Stars. From A Man Called Peter, filmed here in 1954, to the beloved Vampire Diaries series (2009-2017), you begin to get a sense that Covington is a special place.

Enjoy your self-guided tour to view more than 30 pavers for television and film productions that have featured Covington/Newton County iconic places, roads, and buildings for film sites and on film sets.

  • 1978: Tom Wopat, John Schneider The Dukes of Hazzard
    This acclaimed TV series aired from 1979 to 1985, with Covington’s leafy, dusty backroads traversed by the mischievous good boys, the Dukes of Hazzard. Town sheriffs chased The Dukes in their vintage Dodge Charger, The General Lee, with each week’s episode. Visit several high-octane jump areas where the car went above and beyond.
  • 1980: Burt Reynolds Cannonball Run
    Partially filmed in Covington, the high-stakes comedic action movie is about a wild and illegal cross-country road race where the participants will do anything to win.
  • 1988-1994: Alan Autry, Carroll O’ConnorIn The Heat of the Night
    This long-running television series featured the criminal cases and adventures of the police forces in and around Sparta, Mississippi. Pick up the brochure at the Welcome Center to learn what parts of Covington can be seen from this series.
  • 1991: Marisa Tomei – Academy Award Winner My Cousin Vinny
    Two New Yorkers accused of a murder in rural Alabama must call in their inept cousin Vinny to defend them in court. Comedic Northern and Southern stereotypes and accents collide!
  • 2009-2017: Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev, and Paul Wesley Vampire Diaries
    The trio and many other actors played years-long roles about the lives and lurking dangers within Mystic Falls, Virginia. A teenage girl finds herself torn between two vampire brothers as creatures of horror lurk beneath the town. The Lockwood Mansion near the Welcome Center is a big part of this film and you can’t miss it – even the downtown square and courthouse.
  • New! The First United Methodist Church is opening its chapel for weddings now available to the public. This church features prominently in the Vampire series.

Covington is the real Mystic Falls. You’ll see vampire stalkers everywhere in Covington, including in the themed shops. Make sure you visit the Welcome Center exhibits gifted by the filmmakers for you.

Downtown's beautiful historical buildings are centered on the square park, where many concerts and community events occur. Founded in 1822, many buildings in Covington were damaged during Gen. Sherman's March to the Sea during the Civil War, but many historic homes and buildings remain, adding to the city's historic character.
