SUMMERTIME IS HERE

There may not be a better time to be in Covington, GA than the month of June. The city is blooming in all its grandeur. People are out and about. And the events calendar is brimming with activities.

I already have my month planned and I can’t wait to get started.

First, there is no way I’ll miss the Covington Farmers Market (in Heirloom Park at the downtown Welcome Center). Enjoy shopping for local honey, fresh produce from just down the road, home-baked bread, and beautiful flowers grown locally during four Saturdays in June (3, 10, 17, 24). I have nothing against supermarkets, but when it comes to vegetables and fruit, the delectables at the Farmers Market are the best.

The YMCA Bike Rodeo @ Legion Field takes place Saturday, June 3rd. I’ll need to bring my own bicycle and helmet, but I know I’ll be in for a day of safety tips and group rides. This annual event is truly an entertaining family outing.

June brings two opportunities for live, and lively, music. On Friday, June 9th the Live @ Legion Concert will find me firmly in my seat with a cool drink in hand. The evening features September in the Park, a talented Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire tribute band from Atlanta. Then on Friday, June 16th it’s Dueling Pianos on the Square. Also based in nearby Atlanta, The Andrews Brothers will mercilessly battle one another in spectacular fashion. Something interesting is always happening on the Square, but dueling pianos? Count me in.

The next day, Saturday, June 17th, Covington celebrates with a Juneteenth Parade downtown. On June 19, 1865 (thus, Juneteenth), African American slaves in Texas were finally learned they were free. In commemoration, communities around the country host festivities to mark the holiday. Covington knows how to put on parades like no other place I know. I’m arriving early to grab my spot on the route.

One of the wonderful things about the warmer months in Covington is the last Friday of each month. Friday Night Flicks on the Square pulls the community together for a fun evening of movies. On Friday, June 30th, it’s a double feature. Pirates of the Caribbean, showing Johnny Depp in all his Captain Jack Sparrow glory, follows Finding Nemo, with the standout performance by Ellen DeGeneres. What a terrific way to close out June.

Until next time,
